Reported road rage incident in Larimer County now investigated as planned robbery

An apparent road rage shooting in Larimer County on Thursday is now being investigated as a planned robbery.

The incident happened about 4:50 p.m. on U.S. Hwy. 287 at Owl Canyon Road, according to the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office. A vehicle crashed during the incident and sparked a fire that engulfed a responding ambulance.

On Thursday, an SUV with multiple passengers reportedly pulled in front of the victim vehicle, a Kia Sedona van, forcing it to stop, the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office said in a Friday news release. Masked suspects from the SUV fired shots at the van. The van driver lost control of the vehicle, which crashed and caught fire. The suspect vehicle left the scene before first responders arrived.

Eight people in the van were not hit by gunfire. They were evaluated by medical crews and taken to hospitals by ambulance and helicopter for injuries suffered in the crash.

A responding ambulance caught fire at the scene. The fire was not connected to the van fire, and it was contained to the ambulance’s engine area. The cause is under investigation. No one was injured.
