Former Broncos safety Justin Simmons lands one-year, $8 million deal with Atlanta

Justin Simmons’ long offseason is finally over.

His tenure with the Broncos moves a step further into the rearview mirror, too.

The longtime Denver safety on Thursday signed a one-year, $8 million deal with Atlanta, according to his agency, Athletes First.

Simmons, 30, visited Atlanta earlier this week and also recently visited New Orleans.

Now Simmons joins just his second professional team and does it more than halfway through training camp. He spent the first eight years of his NFL career with the Broncos, made a pair of Pro Bowls and four times was named second-team All-Pro. The Broncos released him in March and in the process saved $14.5 million against their salary cap.

Simmons spent much of his offseason in the Denver area. In June, he told The Post that he’d been enjoying a pace to his offseason that he’d never experienced before as a professional.

“This offseason has been such a blessing,” Simmons said then. “I’ve had a tremendous opportunity in my eyes to regain some lost moments of hanging out with family, I’ve got to go to my daughter’s dance recitals and I’ve got to see them grow and I’ve got to be home a lot more. All while training and staying ready so I don’t have to get ready.”

Now he’ll jump right into the deep end in Atlanta, where he pairs with safety Jessie Bates as one of the most dynamic duos in the NFL.

Simmons and the Falcons are set to visit Empower Field on Nov. 17. That will undoubtedly be an emotional homecoming for the safety and for Broncos fans alike.
