A 25-year-old man was sentenced to more than two decades in prison for beating a jogger on a popular Aurora park trail three years ago.
Authorities say Julio Cesar Gonzalez on July 11, 2020, struck a woman who was jogging on the High Line Canal Trail multiple times with a board. He received 20 years for first-degree assault and five years for second-degree assault, the 18th Judicial District Attorney’s Office announced in a Monday news release.
The woman, who suffered “substantial bodily injuries” to her hands and head, was taken to a hospital and ultimately survived.
“While open spaces are for all to enjoy, we all deserve to feel safe,” the unnamed woman said in court, according to the DA’s office. “I’m always on high alert when I hear something behind me, fearing what could be another attack. No number of apologies could undo or right what happened to me that day.”
Investigators found Gonzalez attacked another woman days before the July 11 incident.
