Man charged in Colorado Ballet musician’s drunken-driving death pleads guilty

A 23-year-old man charged in the drunken-driving death of a Colorado musician pleaded guilty to vehicular homicide and vehicular assault in Jefferson County District Court on Monday.

Juan Ortega Torres Jr. was arrested Feb. 5 after Arvada police said he ran a red light at West 64th Avenue and Lamar Street, causing a multi-vehicle crash that killed 44-year-old Kresten Wolff Thomsen and injured two children and the driver of another vehicle.

Thomsen was picking his two children up from school and was a few miles from home when the crash occurred. He was a composer, writer and musician who worked with the Colorado Ballet.

Torres pleaded guilty to vehicular homicide while driving under the influence and two counts of vehicular assault while under the influence, all felonies, according to court records.

Four charges were dismissed, including reckless driving, driving under the influence and vehicular assault.

Torres is set to be sentenced June 11.
