The Rockies released veteran right-hander Jhoulys Chacin on Thursday.
Chacin, 34, began his career as a starter for the Rockies from 2009-14. He returned to the club as a reliever prior to the 2021 season.
The Rockies now have 39 players on their 40-man roster and will need to add a player to their 28-man big-league roster prior to Friday afternoon’s game against the Cubs in Chicago.
Over the past two seasons, Chacin posted a 5.72 ERA over 81 appearances (one start). Since returning from the injured list Aug. 19 after recovering from a toe injury, Chacin pitched in just three games but tossed two scoreless outings in his last two relief appearances.
In ChacÃn’s initial six-year stint with the Rockies, he posted a 38-48 record with a 3.78 ERA in 124 games (109 starts).
Chacin pitched relatively well last season in his return to Colorado, logging 64 1/3 innings with a 4.34 ERA. This season, however, the right-hander was ineffective. In 47 1/3 innings, Chacin had a 7.61 ERA with a 1.606 WHIP and a .282 batting average against.
In 14 seasons in the majors, Chacin has pitched for seven different clubs: Colorado, Atlanta, Milwaukee, Arizona, San Diego, Los Angeles Angeles and Boston.
One of his finest seasons came in 2018 when he made 35 starts for the Brewers and posted a 4.38 ERA. He beat the Rockies in Game 2 of the National League division series, pitching five scoreless innings and allowing just three hits in the Brewers’ 4-0 victory at Milwaukee. The Brewers swept the three-game series.
Chacin’s 45 wins rank 10th in Rockies history, and his 4.05 ERA ranks second among qualified starting pitchers, trailing only Ubaldo Jimenez (3.66). His 598 strikeouts rank ninth in team history.
