Teen suspect in East Colfax Avenue double shooting is charged as an adult

A 16-year-old suspect in a double shooting on East Colfax Avenue in Denver has been charged, as an adult, with attempted murder.

Jalil Mitchell, of Aurora, faces two counts of attempted murder after deliberation and two counts of attempted murder extreme indifference, among other felony charges, according to the Denver District Attorney’s Office.

On Sept. 7, Mitchell allegedly shot two people, a 14-year-old male and a 19-year-old male, in the 2400 block of East Colfax, near Denver East High School and the Carla Madison Recreation Center, according to prosecutors. Both victims were hospitalized for injuries suffered in the shooting. A large group of teens was involved in a fight prior to shots being fired.

An additional 16-year-old male was arrested as part of the investigation. He has not been charged, however, and his name is withheld because of his age. Authorities previously identified the older victim as a 20-year-old and as a juvenile.,

Mitchell has also been charged with two counts of first-degree assault with a deadly weapon causing serious bodily injury, and two counts of first-degree assault extreme indifference. He also faces two misdemeanor weapons charges.
