An inmate at the Weld County Jail died in custody overnight Tuesday, according to the county’s sheriff’s office.
According to sheriff’s officials, 50-year-old Keith Schmedtje was transported to the hospital and pronounced dead at 8:44 p.m..
Schmedtje was being held in Weld County Jail on charges of burglary, trespassing and criminal mischief, awaiting a disposition hearing scheduled for May 20, according to court records.
The 50-year-old previously hadbeen convicted for multiple drug charges, misdemeanor theft and assault in Summit and Larimer counties, according to court records.
The 19th Judicial Critical Incident Response Team will investigate the incident, led by a Greeley Police Department investigator, officials said Tuesday.
No information on the circumstances leading up to his death was available Friday.
“It’s just too soon to tell,” Greeley police Detective Jon Bohl said.
