‘Unable to put on a successful event:’ High Plains Library District’s Popup Pride Celebration canceled

High Plains Library District has elected to not host the annual Greeley Popup Pride Celebration in June.

James Melena, HPLD’s community relations and marketing manager, said the district reached a decision after an internal review of the planning and a recommendation from a “key and valued” partner.

“We have determined that we are unable to put on a successful event that would celebrate our LGBTQIA+ Community at this time,” Melena wrote in an email. “This does not mean that we are stopping our support of Pride events.”

Prior to the cancellation, people of all ages were invited to attend the June 10 event with inclusive community partners and HPLD’s PopUp Library, according to the High Plains website. The event description said:

“This celebration involves all-ages LGBTQIA+ performances, All-Abilities Zumba and Yoga, Pride crafts, community speakers, community vendors and lots of fun for everyone. Show your love and help support diverse communities.”

The pride event cancellation announcement comes after the Colorado Civil Rights Division ordered in February for the High Plains Library District to undergo mediation after finding probable cause in discrimination claims against the district.

Brooky Parks, a former librarian who worked in teen services at the Erie Community Library accused the district of discrimination for firing her from the position based on her association with youth of color and LGBTQ youth. She said she pushed back against High Plains’ requests to cancel two teen programs — one centered on anti-racism and the other focused on LGBTQ history.

Although HPLD will not host the Greeley pride event, Melena said the district plans to participate as a vendor in the Erie and Johnstown 2023 events, as well as future pride events across the district.

“We look forward to partnering with community members on future events,” Melena said.
