Greeley police officers cleared of wrongdoing after fatally shooting man in April

The Weld County District Attorney on Tuesday cleared four Greeley police officers after they shot and killed a man in April, according to a District Attorney’s Office news release.

Officers were attempting to contact the man, identified Tuesday as Ernesto Flores, in connection to a different shooting about 11:45 a.m. April 29 in the 1800 block of 27th Street, a Greeley Police Department news release from April stated.

When officers arrived, the police statement said, Flores began shooting at officers, and the officers returned fire and hit Flores. He died at the scene.

The 19th Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team investigated the shooting, and District Attorney Michael J. Rourke determined the four officers involved were justified in the shooting.

However, a charge of tampering with physical evidence was filed against a woman involved in the incident. The woman’s connection is not clear.

The full report on the shooting and decision letter will not be released until that charge is resolved, a Weld County spokesperson said.
