Trail crews are working to remove graffiti near Green Mountain, one of the Boulder area’s most popular hiking attractions, while police are trying to learn who is responsible.

Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks officials received the initial reports of graffiti near the Green Mountain summit area around 8 a.m. Tuesday.

Phillip Yates, Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks spokesman, acknowledged that police are actively investigating the incident.

“At this time, OSMP trail and trail crew members are working to address the graffiti and remove it,” said Yates. “And the amount of tagging is disappointing, to say the least.”

Yates also said it may take a couple of days to remove the graffiti as it takes time to get resources up into a high mountain area.

“The sad thing is that this diverts our attention from other important land management work,” Yates said. “Given this location, we are going to hand-scrub it with an organic, biodegradable removable liquid.”

According to Yates, rangers are continuing to investigate the incident and requested that if residents see graffiti, to report it to non-emergency dispatch personnel.

“This does occur from time to time but I don’t think we are seeing a general increase. That said, it is really important when people see these types of incidents to report it to us,” said Yates. “When people report (incidents of graffiti)it’s important to include pictures and a GPS location of the area.”

The suspect is unknown, and OSMP rangers are asking anyone who has any information about the crime to call Boulder non-emergency dispatch line, at 303-441-3333.

“It’s another reminder, even beyond graffiti, that we all have the responsibility to protect and conserve these lands,” said Yates.
