Fountain police officer injured following high-speed chase in El Paso County

A Fountain police officer was injured following a high-speed chase in El Paso County Thursday evening, Colorado State Patrol confirmed to Denver7.

On Friday the Fountain Police Department, in a news release, identified the injured officer as Julian Becerra.

Becerra remains in a hospital with serious injuries, police said.

On Thursday evening Becerra, and other officers from multiple agencies, were tracking suspects in a vehicle that was carjacked in Pueblo, police said. About 7:45 p.m., officers pursued the suspect vehicle northbound on Interstate 25 to the South Academy exit where a stop stick, a tire deflating device, was used to partially disable the vehicle.

On South Academy east of Hartford Street, in Colorado Springs, the vehicle was stopped and the driver jumped out and fled on foot, police said. While officers were attempting to apprehend the suspect, Becerra fell 40 feet off the bridge.

Three suspects, including the driver, were arrested and taken to the El Paso County jail.

Becerra, who has been with the department for four years, is a patrol officer and police dog handler. Donations to aid the Becerra family can be made online through the Southern Colorado Law Enforcement Foundation.
