Officer, man injured in Fort Collins police shooting near City Park

UPDATE (Aug. 25, 2024): Eighth Judicial District Attorney Gordon McLaughlin on Friday published a letter finding Fort Collins Police Sgt. Brian Mallory and Officers Peter Nolan, August Barber and Cole Giandomenico were legally justified in using deadly force “to defend themselves, other officers and the public at large” from 42-year-old Clayton Pierce. A man and a Fort Collins police officer were injured in a shooting Sunday afternoon near City Park and Grandview Cemetery, according to the Fort Collins Police Services.

Police responded to a single-vehicle rollover near West Mountain Avenue and South Bryan Avenue around 12:41 p.m., where they found the driver leaving the vehicle with a gun, police officials said in a news release.

The driver “exchanged gunfire with officers” and ran toward the cemetery. Police followed him and “more gunfire occurred,” Fort Collins officials said Sunday.

SWAT officers in an armored vehicle approached the man, who was injured, arrested him and provided medical aid. He was taken to a hospital, but his status was not immediately available.

The injured officer was also taken to a hospital and is expected to recover, according to the agency.

The Larimer County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the shooting.
