Firefighters northwest of Colorado Springs near Monument quickly suppressed a fire burning in oak brush Tuesday morning, the second small blaze in a day.

This Mount Herman Fire burned on about a third of an acre, U.S. Forest Service officials said in a posting at 9:03 a.m. on Twitter. Monument firefighters and federal land managers responded, and recent forestry work to reduce vegetation in the area “helped aid suppression efforts,” officials said. The cause was not known.

No evacuations were called in that fire.

On Monday, the May fire west of Fort Carson on the southwest side of Colorado Springs, ignited by lightning, burned about one-quarter of an acre in fir and conifer trees. Firefighters aided by a state helicopter brought flames under control, forest service officials said.

The state Division of Fire Prevention and Control helicopter dropped buckets of water on flames, cooling the fire, while firefighting ground crews hiked to the area, south of Cheyenne Mountain, officials said Monday evening.

Other small fires were reported this week southwest of Bailey and west of Buena Vista. Firefighters quickly suppressed these.
