Information still sought after man shot to death in Thornton field one year ago

Thornton police are still searching for suspect information in a 1-year-old homicide in which a man was shot to death in a field.

Officers found the body of Patrick Gunter with multiple gunshot wounds in the 500 block of 168th Avenue near Colorado 7 about 6:30 a.m. Feb. 16, 2023, according to a news release from the time.

Officers later determined Gunter was shot the day before, on Feb. 15, 2023, between 9:30 and 10 p.m., according to a flyer from Metro Denver Crime Stoppers posted Thursday on X by the Thornton Police Department. Police also later recovered a maroon 2021 Dodge Durango that Gunter was known to have been driving.

The Larimer County Sheriff’s Office less than a week before his death identified Gunter as a suspect in a series of car thefts in Fort Collins and Loveland, the Loveland Reporter-Herald reported. He was wanted on charges of aggravated motor vehicle theft and vehicular eluding after a Feb. 8, 2023, incident in which deputies alleged he eluded officers before abandoning a stolen vehicle on railroad tracks.

A second vehicle was reported stolen and found abandoned after that.

Anyone with information about Gunter’s death can contact Metro Denver Crime Stoppers at 720-913-7867.
