Woman dead, man jailed after fatal domestic violence shooting near Cherry Creek Reservoir

A 42-year-old woman is dead and a 45-year-old man is in jail Thursday following a fatal shooting near the Cherry Creek Reservoir that Arapahoe County authorities described as an isolated case of domestic violence.

Tracy Lee Lechner died at the scene of the shooting, shortly before 8 a.m. Thursday, in the 5200 block of South Geneva Way, Arapahoe County Sheriff spokeswoman Ginger Delgado said. Paramedics found her body outside the house in front of an open garage, Delgado said.

The Arapahoe County Coroner on Monday ruled Lechner’s manner of death to be a homicide.

A man who drove away from the scene later was caught about one mile away near East Orchard Road and South Havana Street where he crashed his vehicle, according to a tweet from the sheriff’s department. Neighbors helped deputies track him, and some tried unsuccessfully to keep him from fleeing. Due to police activity, three elementary schools in the area were placed on secure status, keeping students indoors.

The man, identified in the tweet as David Samuel Lechner, was “superficially” injured and was treated at Sky Ridge Medical Center before being taken into custody, Delgado said.

According to the tweet, Lechner is being held without bond at the Arapahoe County Detention Facility on charges of first-degree murder, felony menacing/aggravated assault with a gun and misdemeanor domestic violence.

The relationship between the two hadn’t been determined, Delgado said, and investigators were interviewing neighbors. The woman had moved into the house a few months ago. Police previously had not received calls about trouble at that house.
