A man carrying a pipe was shot to death Thursday by a Saguache County sheriff’s deputy near Crestone.
The Saguache County deputy was driving near Crestone around noon on Thursday when he saw a 40-year-old white man walking about a mile from the entrance of the Baca Grande community, according to a news release from the Colorado Bureau of Investigation.
The Baca Grande encompasses about 14,000 acres of land on the western edge of the Sangre de Cristo Wilderness and the eastern edge of the Rio Grande geological rift in the San Luis Valley.
Investigators said the deputy recognized the man as having an active warrant and pulled over.
When the deputy attempted to talk with the man, the suspect allegedly began attacking the deputy with a 4-foot metal pipe, the news release stated. The deputy shot the man twice in response.
The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene, and the deputy was treated at a nearby hospital for minor injuries. Authorities have identified neither of the two.
