A fatal police shooting in Greeley is being referred to a Weld County grand jury.
On Nov. 8, a Greeley police officer shot a man who was armed with a knife, police said at the time of the incident.
The Weld County District Attorney’s Office on Tuesday announced that the police shooting investigation will go before a grand jury.
“Under Colorado law, grand jury proceedings are secret and not open to the public,” the DA’s office said in a news release.
The man who was shot is identified by the Weld County Coroner’s Office as 33-year-old Benjamin Weise.
The shooting happened after officers responded to the 100 block of East 20th Street, in the Meadow Village Mobile Home Park, to arrest a man who was wanted on several warrants, police said at the time.
According to police, Weise had barricaded himself inside a home, leading additional officers to respond to the scene. After about three hours of negotiations, and the use of “less lethal munitions,” the suspect, armed with a knife, attempted to exit the residence toward several officers.
“One Greeley Police officer fired multiple rounds at the suspect, striking him,” a Nov. 8 police news release said. Officers rendered aid, including CPR, but Weise died at the scene. There were no other injuries.
Weise was wanted on open warrants in an Evans police case for failure to register as a sex offender, according to the Greeley Tribune.
