A 50-year-old man died in a fatal car crash on Monday morning on the on-ramp from Interstate 25 to E-470.
Colorado State Patrol received a call at 5:45 a.m. about the possibility of three vehicles involved in a road rage incident, with the wreck happening near southbound I-25 on the on-ramp to southbound E-470, Sergeant Patrick Rice said in an emailed statement on Monday.
According to witnesses cited in a Tuesday news release, a 24-year-old local man behind the wheel of a Toyota 4Runner may have driven aggressively on I-25 before taking the exit to E-470. On the ramp, he allegedly continued his behavior, involving a white sedan before losing control of his SUV and rolling.
The 4Runner stopped on the southbound lanes of E-470 before a Toyota Tacoma hit the vehicle. Investigators cannot yet confirm whether the 4Runner’s lights were working at that point and “determine how visible the hazard was to approaching traffic,” the news release reports.
A third car hit the debris caused by the crash at Washington Avenue mile marker 46, Rice said. The drivers of the Tacoma and the 4Runner both left the scene by ambulance in critical condition. The former later died, while the latter remains in the hospital.
The crash is under investigation, and no charges have been filed yet. However, state patrol is asking anyone with information, including the identity of the white sedan’s driver, to call them at 303-239-4522.
The Broomfield Police Department assisted state patrol on the scene.
The lanes of E-470 reopened around 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday after a three-hour closure following the crash. The toll road was shut down along the Northwest Parkway from Sheridan Parkway to Interstate 25 just after 6 a.m., according to E470 Road Updates.
