A man died overnight at a dog park in Aurora after an accidental explosion involving homemade fireworks, according to the Aurora Police Department in a Thursday morning X post.
Officers responded about 12:49 a.m. to the Grandview Dog Park near Quincy Reservoir after multiple people reported an explosion, police said.
At the park, officers found a 42-year-old Strasburg man who had suffered fatal injuries.
The man traveled to Aurora with two other people to visit food and beverage businesses, according to a release. They went to Grandview Dog Park before 12:49 a.m. and brought multiple large, commercial-grade fireworks. Police do not know whether the fireworks are homemade or were purchased out-of-state.
The man was lighting a firework when it exploded and caused the fatal injuries. No other injuries or property damage has been reported.
The Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office bomb squad and agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives also responded to the 12:49 a.m. call. Four additional fireworks were deactivated.
Law enforcement officials did not find additional fireworks or evidence of explosive making activity in the man’s home.
The Regional Anti-Violence Enforcement Network is investigating this incident as an accidental death and no criminal charges are anticipated.
