An elementary school student in El Paso County has been arrested on investigation of bringing a handgun to school.
At about 9:30 a.m. Tuesday sheriff’s deputies responded to Evans Elementary School, 1675 Winnebago Road, in the Cimarron Hills area, on a report of a student with a gun.
“A handgun was discovered inside his backpack along with ammunition and a magazine,” according to a sheriff’s office news release.
The student was arrested and booked into the Zebulon Pike Youth Services Center on investigation of unlawful possession of a weapon on school grounds, a class 6 felony.
“This investigation revealed the student said he had not brought the gun to school to engage in violence but simply to show to his friends,” the release said.
The student was not identified because of his age. An investigation is ongoing.
