Arapahoe County authorities call off search for prison escapee

After three hours of hunting with K-9s and drones, authorities in Arapahoe County have called off the search for a 56-year-old man who escaped from the Department of Corrections.

Sean Hanneman is wanted for a parole violation and escape and is known to carry large knives, the sheriff’s office said on X.

The Department of Corrections issued a warrant for Hanneman’s arrest in 2021, but his whereabouts have been unknown until now, sheriff’s officials said in an update Wednesday.

Arapahoe County sheriff’s deputies attempted to arrest Hanneman at a Centennial home in the 2500 block of East Easter Avenue when the 56-year-old fled Wednesday morning, according to the sheriff’s office.

Deputies searched for nearly three hours using K9s and drones but were unable to locate Hanneman and called off the search shortly before noon.

As deputies searched the area between East Arapahoe and East Dry Creek roads and South University and South Colorado boulevards, Sandburg Elementary School was placed on a secure perimeter, sheriff’s officials said. The secure perimeter was lifted Wednesday afternoon.

Anyone who sees Hanneman — described by sheriff’s officials as 6 feet tall, 160 pounds and bald — is urged to call 911 immediately.
