The Colorado Department of Transportation is warning motorists that its annual winter travel advisory for eastbound Interstate 70 because of sun glare near Floyd Hill is in effect.
The advisory states that early-morning road closures may occur for up to an hour between exits 244 and 248 just east of Idaho Springs because of intense sun glare until February.
The early-morning commute from sunrise to about 8:30 a.m. may be rerouted to U.S. 6 at exit 244 near Floyd Hill, according to the announcement. Drivers may choose to continue on the road through Clear Creek Canyon or turn onto U.S. 40 and return to the interstate at exit 248. Overhead electronic signs beginning just east of the Eisenhower Tunnel will warn motorists of glare and slower speeds ahead.
The morning sun, in addition to the angle of Floyd Hill and the contour of the road, can create a blinding glare for eastbound drivers, especially when there is moisture on the roadway, the release noted. The State Patrol and CDOT will collaborate in evaluating the roadway each morning to determine if a closure is necessary.
Due to height restrictions in tunnels on U.S. 6, freight trucks are advised to use U.S. 40. Drivers on U.S. 40 should exercise extra caution as the route will be a road worksite, although active work will not occur during sun glare safety closures.
