The person fatally struck by a vehicle in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 70 near Golden on Thursday morning was fleeing a Colorado State Patrol traffic stop, authorities said.
The crash closed the eastbound lanes of the interstate for more than eight hours.
According to a CSP news release, a trooper saw a vehicle traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes of Colorado 470 toward I-70 at about 1:50 a.m.
The trooper stopped the vehicle, and the male driver got out as the trooper, who suspected the man was impaired, approached to speak with him, the release stated. While the trooper tried to identify the man, he got back into the vehicle on the passenger side and climbed into the driver’s seat.
The trooper then used a stun gun on the man to keep him from driving off, according to the state patrol.
But the man removed the stun gun probes, started the vehicle and drove down a grassy median, over a retaining wall and landed on the eastbound I-70 offramp that leads to westbound U.S. 6 into Golden.
The man then ran out of his vehicle across the offramp and jumped over another concrete barrier onto eastbound I-70, where he was hit and killed by a passing motorist, the news release stated.
That driver remained on scene.
The name of the man who was killed has not been released. A multi-jurisdictional investigation into the crash is ongoing.
The eastbound lanes were closed between the Morrison Road and C-470 exits until 10:23 a.m., according to the Colorado Department of Transportation.
C-470 eastbound was closed just before the U.S. 6 interchange but reopened just before 8 a.m.
The westbound exit ramp from Interstate 70 to C-470 was also closed due to safety concerns but has reopened.
CSP in its news release stated that body-worn and dash camera footage would be released in the following days.
