The bodies of two men were recovered Friday from about 15 feet of water in Dillon Reservoir where the pair apparently drowned during a night time swim, the Summit County Sheriff’s Office said.

The bodies were recovered at about 1 p.m. about 100 feet from the shore where the men had left clothing before getting into the water on Thursday night, according to a news release.

At about 7:20 p.m. Thursday the sheriff’s office responded to the Heaton Bay Campground on a report of “two intoxicated males driving around in the campground,” the release said.

Deputies found the vehicle unoccupied and they initially searched the area for over an hour, in the campground and by boat on the lake, but didn’t find the men.

A short time later, deputies were called back to the campground and directed to the beach where two folded piles of clothes were located along with some personal items. The water in the area is known to be shallow and in the darkness deputies again searched along the beach, in the campground and surrounding areas, but didn’t find the men.

Early Friday morning, when the men had still not returned, “an extensive land, air and water search was initiated by the Summit County Sheriff’s Office, Summit County Water Rescue Team and the Summit County Rescue Group,” the release said.

Searches used land-based teams, boats, drones and underwater remote-operated instruments in their efforts.

The bodies were recovered from the water where the shallow beach meets a steep drop off, the sheriff’s office said, and they were taken to the Summit County Coroner’s Office. The pair were not identified.

“This is a tragic loss of two lives,” said Sheriff Jaime FitzSimons, in the release. “Our thoughts and prayers for all involved.”

An investigation is ongoing and the coroner’s office will determine the cause and manner of death.
