One of the Denver Zoo Conservation Alliance’s youngest members is now named after a beloved local landmark.
Hundreds of new and returning zoo members had the chance to vote on a name for the zoo’s baby sloth during Celebrate Colorado week in late July and early August, said spokesperson Jake Kubié.
The winning pick for the female Linne’s two-toed sloth pup born in April was Sloan, after Sloan’s Lake.
“The name Sloan represents calm, interconnectedness and the breathtaking landscapes of Colorado. It’s a tribute to the state’s natural beauty and the tranquil spirit of our newest addition to the sloth family,” zoo officials said in a statement.
More than 500 people who signed up or renewed their memberships participated in the voting process, with 230 voting for Sloan.
Other options included Harper, after renowned National Park Service illustrator Charley Harper; and Isabel/Weminuche, after the Weminuche Wilderness and San Isabel National Forest. There were 160 votes for Isabel/Weminuche and 118 for Harper, according to zoo officials.
Visitors can see Sloan and her mom, Charlotte, in their tree-top habitat at the Tropical Discovery building.
