Winter is coming back to Denver soon.
A storm that has the potential to drop between six and 12 inches of snow in the Denver metro area arrives Friday afternoon.
LATEST UPDATE: Colorado weather: Snow storm sweeps across the state Friday, hitting Denver area Saturday
While it is possible for Denver to see the heavy snow, forecasters at the National Weather Service in Boulder said there is still a lot of variability in the possible outcome of the storm.
About 30% of the forecast models showed the heaviest snow possibilities, but many more showed little to no snow falling between Denver and Fort Collins.
”The forecast fun continues trying to figure out this storm,” NWS Boulder meteorologist David Barjenbruch said. “Needless to say, confidence remains low, and quite possibly one of the lowest confidence scenarios this particular forecaster has dealt with in his decades of weather forecasting here in Colorado.”
The main variables are a possible barrier jet and precipitation rates.
Temperatures in Denver will still stay fairly mild, with highs in the 40s through the weekend.
The mountains have the highest confidence of heavy snow, where up to 20 inches could fall in some areas.
A winter storm watch has been issued for elevations above 9,000 feet.
Snow will begin Friday afternoon and will likely continue through Saturday night.
The foothills could also see heavy, wet snow Saturday that causes slick and dangerous travel conditions.
