Denver weather: Frigid temperatures expected overnight as light snow continues

Temperatures in Denver will be dropping to the low teens Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights as light snow continues through Saturday.

Some areas of the metro had less snowfall than expected during the slow-to-start Thursday night showers, but light snow and flurries will continue across the area through Saturday morning.

The western Denver suburbs of Jefferson County and portions of eastern Boulder County were initially in a winter storm warning for expected heavy snow, but forecasters at the National Weather Service in Boulder lowered that warning to an advisory as the snow moved in much lighter than expected.

There had been a nearly 80% chance Denver would receive at least two inches of snow and a 50% chance Boulder would receive at least six inches by Saturday, but as of 5 a.m., Denver International Airport received 1.2 inches and Boulder received 2.9 inches.

Overall, an additional one to three inches of snow are possible in areas west of Interstate 25 on Friday night.

The winter weather advisories across the metro are set to expire at 11 a.m.

The temperatures over the weekend, particularly at night, are the main weather concern now, with Denver expected to get into the low teens every night through Sunday night.

Friday night’s low is 13 degrees; Saturday’s low is 12 degrees; and Sunday’s low is 16 degrees.

The high Friday is 28 degrees, and the Saturday high is 24 degrees.

Denver has emergency overnight shelters available all three nights at the Denver Coliseum and New Directions, city officials said in a news release.

The two shelters will be open from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m.

People needing shelter should go to the city’s “front door” shelter access points, Lawrence Street Community Center for men, Samaritan House for women, and Urban Peak for people aged 15 to 20. Those shelters will also have expanded capacity for the cold weather.

Families in need of shelter should call the Connection Center at 303-295-3366.

The city also will open warming centers in all recreation centers that would already be open during regular business hours on Friday. An area in each center will be staffed, with access to drinking water, restrooms, and a place to sit, according to a city news release.
