Denver is preparing for a couple nights of below-freezing temperatures as lows Thursday and Friday will likely drop to the low 20s.
Forecasters at the National Weather Service expect Thursday and Friday’s lows to be 22 degrees. Friday’s forecast also includes a 20% chance of snow.
Two severe weather shelters will open overnight Thursday in Denver to get unsheltered people inside. The former Best Western Hotel, now called New Directions, 4595 Quebec St., and the former Doubletree Hotel, 4040 Quebec St., will open at 7 p.m. Thursday to 7 a.m. the next morning, city officials announced in a news release.
People needing shelter should go to the city’s “front door” shelter access points: Lawrence Street Community Center, Samaritan House and Urban Peak, which are all expanding their capacity for the cold overnight.
Buses will transfer people from the St. Francis Center at 2323 Curtis Street to the former hotels between 6:30 p.m. and 9 p.m.
Families needing shelter should call the Connection Center at 303-295-3366.
