Denver weather: Mostly cloudy skies with p.m. showers and thunderstorms

Showers and thunderstorms in the mountains and foothills will move into the metro area this evening, mainly south of the Interstate 70 corridor, bringing a chance of moderate to heavy rainfall for some areas, according to the National Weather Service forecast.

In Denver, there’s a 30% chance of afternoon showers and thunderstorms extending into the evening, according to the weather service. Skies will be mostly cloudy and the high temperature will top out near 78 degrees. The overnight low temperature will be about 55 degrees under cloudy skies.

Some storms in the metro area on Saturday will unleash winds up to 35 mph and up 1.5 inches of rain in an hour. The stormy weather is expected to diminish overnight, but crank up again on Sunday afternoon.

On Sunday in Denver there will be a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms before 1 p.m., the weather service said, with an increase for precipitation as the day progresses. Showers and thunderstorms are likely after 4 p.m., with a 60% chance of precipitation. Skies will be partly sunny and the high temperature will be about 80 degrees. The overnight low temperature will be near 60 degrees.

The weekend rain, into Monday, will elevate the risk for flash flooding in wildfire scar areas, the weather service said.

On Monday in Denver there’s a 20% chance of showers and thunderstorms after 10 a.m., according to the NWS forecast. Skies will be mostly sunny and the high will be around 83 degrees.

A drier, warmer weather pattern along the Front Range will arrive late on Monday and run through Wednesday, with only isolated to scattered showers in the mountains. The plains will be mainly dry with seasonal temperatures.
