Denver weather: Severe thunderstorm warning with damaging winds, hail expected

Update 2:40 p.m.: A severe thunderstorm with wind gusts up to 60 mph and nickel-sized hail is moving across the south Denver metro, according to National Weather Service forecasters.

The NWS issued a severe thunderstorm warning for portions of Denver, Douglas, Arapahoe and Jefferson counties until 3:15 p.m.

Wind gusts and hail could damage roofs, siding and trees, forecasters said in an alert.

The storm is expected to move through Littleton, Highlands Ranch, Roxborough Park, Chatfield Reservoir, Centennial, Louviers, Lone Tree, Castle Pines and Parker.

Original story: The hot streak of 90-degree weather continues for a third day in Colorado Friday before cooler, stormy weather is set to move in overnight and continue throughout the weekend, according to the National Weather Service.

Denver will see temperatures of up to 93 degrees Friday — a record high for the year so far, according to NWS forecasters.

Rain showers and thunderstorms will move into the Denver area around 4 p.m. Friday and continue through Monday, forecasters said. The strongest chance for city storms is Saturday afternoon through the evening and Monday afternoon.

Some of the storms could be severe with large hail and damaging winds, according to a NWS hazardous weather outlook.

The threat of severe storms is lower on Sunday, but heavy rain is possible over the Front Range and areas just east of the mountains, including Denver, the outlook stated.

With heavy rain and storms comes a slight cooling trend. NWS meteorologists have forecasted temperatures in the low 80s and high 70s over the weekend — a significant drop from Denver’s current trend of 90-degree weather.

After Monday, the dry and warm weather trend will continue as the storm system moves out and Denver residents can expect temperature highs in the 90s to return as early as Wednesday, forecasters said.
