Man arrested in Five Points shooting that killed two, injured others

Denver police have arrested a man suspected of shooting four people in Five Points in August, leaving two people dead and two others injured.

Tyrell Braxton, 24, was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of first-degree murder and first-degree assault in connection with the shooting near 28th and Welton streets at 3:50 a.m. Aug. 19, the Denver Police Department announced Wednesday.

Police initially reported three victims in the shooting, including Gulian Musiwa, 25, who died at the scene; Lumumba Sayers, 23, who died later at the hospital; and a third injured person. The department included a fourth injured victim in Wednesday’s announcement.

Police first identified Braxton as a suspect on Aug. 24.

Braxton’s arrest affidavit details the moments leading up to and after the shooting, including surveillance video that allegedly shows Braxton in an argument with Musiwa before Braxton starts backing away while firing a handgun toward Musiwa. Braxton then turned and ran northeast.

The two injured victims were walking next to and behind Musiwa, according to the affidavit.

Surveillance video also shows Sayers shooting in the direction Braxton was running and then doubling over, which police believe is when he was shot, according to the affidavit.

In addition to surveillance video, investigators identified Braxton through anonymous tips to Crimestoppers and other sources, according to the affidavit. Officials obtained a warrant for Braxton’s cell phone records, which showed him in the area at the time of the shooting.
