The Denver Post sports staff won several awards at the recently completed Associated Press Sports Editor’s judging conference in Florida. The Post entered the large circulation category, featuring the biggest newspapers and websites covering sports. The Post won Top 10 honors for 2022 in the following categories:
Print portfolio, which comprised both daily and Sunday print sections.
Event coverage for stories about the Avs clinching the Stanley Cup. The winning entry featured the game story by Ryan O’Halloran, columns by Mark Kiszla and Sean Keeler, and sidebars by Kyle Fredrickson and Mike Chambers.
Long feature, Sean Keeler, for his tale of Broncos’ super fan Tony Young, who is alive thanks to a heart and kidney donation.
Short feature, Sean Keeler, for his story about an Avs fan who spread the ashes of his best friend on the ice at Ball Arena. And then was banned from attending any more Avs games.
Action photography, AAron Ontiveroz, for his photo of a Broncos running back soaring through the air.
The winning writing and photo entries will go through another round of judging and then be ranked 1-10.
