Threats against Denver high schools unfounded; investigation ongoing

Denver police were investigating threats at several high schools on Friday morning, but officials believe the threats to be false.

The threats against East High School, Northfield High School, South High School and Denver Center for 21st Century Learning were the second wave of false threats against schools in Colorado this week.

On Wednesday, more than a dozen schools around the state received coordinated, and unfounded, “swatting” threats, with a caller claiming to be an active shooter on campus as gunfire was heard in the background of the call.

Jay Casillas, a spokesperson for the Denver Police Department, wrote in an email that police would continue to investigate the unfounded threats made Friday until they find out who is responsible.

Denver Public Schools officials said on Twitter that the four schools “received the exact same message with threats of violence.”

“Law enforcement responded as though these are real situations to ensure student and staff safety and will provide additional safety presences at each campus for the remainder of the day,” DPS officials wrote.

On Feb. 13, a 16-year-old student, Luis Garcia, was shot near the East High School campus. He was taken to a hospital in critical condition. An investigation into his shooting is ongoing.
