Denver police have arrested a 23-year-old man in connection with an overnight shooting in the 8800 block of East Colfax Avenue that sent one person to the hospital.
Elijah McDonald is suspected of attempted first-degree murder, according to the Denver Police Department.
McDonald is facing charges in a different case in Adams County for first-degree assault, felony menacing and reckless endangerment dating back to June 2022, according to court records. He pleaded guilty to misdemeanor assault in a separate Adams County case in July 2022.
According to an arrest affidavit, police responded to a shooting in the area at 9:02 p.m. and found one male victim with a gunshot wound to the chest near the bus stop along the north side of the 8800 block of East Colfax Avenue.
A witness told police that before the shooting, the victim was upset after getting into an argument with an unrelated person and was pacing back and forth in front of the bus stop when McDonald began talking trash to him.
McDonald pointed a handgun at the victim’s head, who then said, “What, are you going to shoot me?”, according to the affidavit. McDonald then shot the victim once in the chest from 3 to 5 feet away.
Officers found McDonald in the laundry room of a nearby business with a handgun magazine, and a witness later identified him as the person who shot the victim, according to the affidavit.
A second shooting in the 8200 block of East Colfax Avenue was reported at 1:42 a.m. Monday, according to a Denver Police Department post on X.
When officers arrived, they found one victim dead at the scene, according to the post. The Denver Office of the Medical Examiner on Friday identified the victim as Jeramy Sillemon, 34. The announcement called the death a homicide.
No suspect information has been released at this time.
