After the rush of the roster cutdown, front offices around the NFL set about scouring more than 1,000 new names on the waiver wire and in free agency.
Then they start putting together their 16-man practice squads (with an international player as the 17th, if they so choose).
The Broncos announced the signing of 15 players Wednesday afternoon and are also expected to sign tight end Donald Parham Jr., sources tell The Post, leaving one open spot.
Head coach Sean Payton said Wednesday after Denver’s practice that the Broncos had hit all of their priorities on the practice squad and called out a pair of skill position players as particular priorities.
“David Sills had a great camp. He was the first guy we homed in on,” Payton said when talking about the team’s receivers that didn’t make the 53-man roster.
Then he brought up running back Tyler Badie.
“I had an hour conversation with Badie just relative to, ‘Hey, you’re doing well,’” Payton said. “I think he’s had a fantastic camp. He and Sills, you can’t help but notice them each day.”
Parham, 27, played his first four seasons with the division rival Los Angeles Chargers and last year caught 27 passes for 285 yards and four touchdowns. He provides experience behind the four-man group on the 53-man roster.
Here’s the Broncos’ practice squad:
TE Donald Parham
FB Mike Burton
WR Lil’Jordan Humphrey
CB Reese Taylor
CB Quinton Newsome
DT Jordan Miller
OL Will Sherman
WR David Sills
OLB Dondrea Tillman
RB Tyler Badie
OL Nick Gargiulo
DL Matt Henningsen
S Tanner McCalister
WR Michael Bandy
OL Calvin Throckmorton
TE Thomas Yassmin (international player)
Players in, players out: The Broncos lost one player to a waiver claim in offensive tackle Demontrey Jacobs, who is off to New England. Wide receivers Brandon Johnson (Pittsburgh) and Jalen Virgil (Buffalo) each landed on other practice squads Wednesday. Sources said that Denver wanted to bring each of the receivers back to its practice squad but that Johnson and Virgil thought they had better opportunities elsewhere.
Also on Wednesday, former Denver running back Samaje Perine agreed to sign to Kansas City’s active roster, so the Broncos will see him twice this year.
“It all stings when they go on,” Payton said of former players. “And yet, I mean this, having coached a number of players that have gone on, I can think of so many —Alex Anzalone, Trey Hendrickson, Marcus Williams, Reggie Bush to the Dolphins — you root for them. I want them to do well. I really do. Now, not against us.
“But you want to see them have success because you’ve invested in them and then there’s an attachment with that time and coaching.”
Payton spoke for the first time since Denver informed receiver Tim Patrick of his release Monday and called the decision “extremely difficult.”
“I sent him a text today when I found out he’s going to Detroit,” Payton said. “I’m happy because I know Dan Campbell that well and I think the world of Tim.”
