Denver International Airport experiencing major delays amid severe weather

Intense severe weather Wednesday across parts of the Denver metro area has caused some significant delays at Denver International Airport, particularly for inbound flights.

UPDATE: Denver International Airport flights delayed, canceled Thursday amid stormy weather

As of 5 p.m., 608 flights have been delayed in or out of Denver, and 129 flights have been canceled, according to FlightAware.

The site’s delay information page said inbound flights to DIA are delayed at their origins an average of over two and a half hours; arrivals of airborne planes are experiencing delays between 16 and 30 minutes, and departures are delayed an average of 28 minutes.

The majority of delayed flights through Denver are from United Airlines and Southwest Airlines, with 220 and 231 flights delayed respectively.

The total delays are split almost evenly between arrivals and departures, with 309 departing flights delayed and 299 arriving flights delayed. Each total accounts for just over 30% of traffic through Denver’s airport.

A federal hold that delayed all airplane flights bound for Denver International Airport Wednesday morning was lifted earlier in the day, Denver International Airport officials said.

Federal Aviation Administration officials ordered the hold “due to low visibility,” DIA spokeswoman Stephanie Figueroa said.

“There could be a ripple effect and some flights could still be delayed,” Figueroa said. “We advise passengers to check with their airline for up-to-date flight status.”

FAA officials warned that thunderstorms anticipated Wednesday afternoon could affect flights into and out of DIA throughout the day.
