A 14-year-old who was speeding on a Commerce City street is in critical condition, and five other people are hospitalized after a crash Tuesday morning.
The 14-year-old boy had three other teenage boys in his car and was driving west on East 88th Avenue at about 8:20 a.m. when he struck a guide rail and veered into oncoming traffic, hitting a minivan, according to the Commerce City Police Department and South Adams County Fire Department on Facebook and X.
The boy’s vehicle then ended up in a creek, and all four teenagers were ejected from the vehicle, police said.
“Slow down. Seatbelts. Don’t drive if you aren’t licensed to do so,” police said in a Facebook post about the “preventable” crash. “There’s a reason we want you to abide by (the) law, and it’s not just because we may ticket you.”
The front passenger of the vehicle was a 12-year-old boy police believe is the 14-year-old’s brother, Commerce City police spokesperson Joanna Small said. The two teenage boys in the backseat are 16 years old.
Two women were in the minivan, and they sustained minor injuries, according to the Commerce City Police Department’s Facebook post.
All six people were taken to hospitals; the 14-year-old driver was in critical condition.
