Evacuations ordered in Vision Hills wildfire in Pueblo; blaze 80% contained

Residents in north Pueblo were ordered to evacuate Friday afternoon after a grass fire grew to 82 acres, according to county officials.

People living a half mile north of 1945 Overton Road were ordered to evacuate at 1 p.m., the Pueblo County Sheriff’s Office said in a post on the social media site X. The office said approximately 25 homes were asked to evacuate, with residents urged not to wait or delay to collect belongings and to head north on Overton Road.

A reception center for residents evacuating was set up at the Pueblo County Parks Office at 1650 Cooper Place, according to the sheriff’s office. Residents should enter off of Roselawn Road.

The fire was reported at 12:36 p.m. and initially was estimated at 100 acres by the Bureau of Land Management’s wildfire dashboard. Sheriff’s officials updated the estimated size at 82 acres with 80% containment as of 5:25 p.m.

Air resources were deployed to help fight the fire as of 1:30 p.m., the sheriff’s office said on X.

Pueblo County was under a red-flag warning because of dangerous fire conditions. Winds were blowing southwest at 25 mph on Friday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service.

Pueblo and most of the Front Range are forecast to see high winds through Sunday, with gusts up to 85 mph possible.

A second fire burning at Evraz steel mill sent a black plume of smoke over the city, and the sheriff’s office issued pre-evacuation orders for homes in the 1000 and 1100 blocks of Palo Alto Street in the Salt Creek neighborhood at 4:50 p.m.

City officials asked residents living near the steel mill to shelter in place, shut windows and turn off air conditioners because of air-quality concerns.

In a statement, Evraz officials said the fire broke out in a building used for staging and storage and that all employees were immediately evacuated and accounted for.
