How much snow will Denver get this weekend? Here’s why forecasters are unsure.

More snow is on its way to Denver this weekend, but just how much and what areas will be hit the hardest is up in the air, according to National Weather Service forecasters.

NWS meteorologists announced another snowstorm was headed for Colorado on social media Thursday afternoon, issuing a Winter Storm Watch for the foothills, Palmer Divide and areas of the plains from Friday afternoon to Saturday night.

Forecasters are confident in the timing of the storm — predicting the heaviest snowfall overnight Friday — but that confidence decreases when trying to pinpoint what locations will be hit the hardest and just how much snow will accumulate, the weather service stated.

It’s difficult for meteorologists to predict the exact location of snow bands as the storm moves across the state, which makes it hard to estimate more precise details, according to NWS forecasters.

Snow had already arrived in the mountains and foothills Friday morning, and NWS meteorologists expect the storm to spread to the metro area by Friday afternoon.

Instead of last week’s switch up from rain to snow throughout the day, colder weather across the state this weekend will turn all precipitation to snow from the beginning of the storm, according to NWS meteorologists.

Denver and other cities in the metro area are expected to see between 1 and 6 inches of snow accumulation this weekend, with more falling out east toward Denver International Airport and south towards Castle Rock, according to NWS data.

NWS forecasters expect less than half an inch of snow accumulation in Denver Friday afternoon as temperatures hover around 43 degrees. As temperatures dip to the low 20s overnight, another 2 inches of snow should accumulate across the city, according to NWS forecasters.

Snow showers will continue across Colorado Saturday, tapering off later into the evening, according to a NWS Hazardous Weather Outlook Friday.

Little to no snow accumulation is expected in the Denver area Saturday, but the weather will continue to make travel slick, the outlook stated.
