Roads reopen after blizzard conditions on Tuesday caused continued closures Wednesday in eastern Colorado

Update 7:50 p.m.:

U.S. 24 from Seibert to Burlington and U.S. 385 from Holyoke to County Road LL.5 are reopened, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation. Road conditions are wet with snowy and icy spots throughout northeast Colorado, according to the agency.

Update 6:30 p.m.: 

Most of the highways in eastern Colorado that closed due to blizzard conditions were reopened as of Wednesday night, including:

U.S. 36 from Colo. 71 in Last Chance to the Kansas state line;
U.S. 138 eastbound from Sterling to Julesberg;
Colo. 59 from Interstate 70 in Seibert to U.S. 36 in Cope and from Yuma to Hedgwick;
Colo. 61 from U.S. 6 in Sterling to Otis;
and Colo. 63 from U.S. 34 in Anton to U.S. 36 in Akron.

U.S. 24 from Seibert to Burlington remains closed due to safety concerns, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation.

U.S. 385 from Holyoke to County Road LL.5, 18 miles north of Burlington, also remains closed.

Update 2 p.m.: 

U.S. 34 has reopened from Brush to the Nebraska state line.

U.S. 385 has partially reopened between the Nebraska state line and Holyoke but is still closed from Holyoke to Cheyenne Wells.

Update 10 a.m.:

Interstate 76 eastbound has reopened from the Denver metro to the Nebraska state line.

U.S. 6 has reopened from Sterling to the Nebraska state line.

Colorado 71 has reopened from Interstate 70 in Limon to U.S. 34 near Brush.

Update 8:35 a.m.:

One lane of Interstate 70 westbound in Stratton has reopened after a tractor-trailer crash.

Update 7:50 a.m.: 

Interstate 70 westbound is closed in Stratton due to a tractor-trailer crash, and eastbound traffic is down to one lane. The crash was reported at 7:40 a.m.

CDOT traffic cameras show trailers stuck on both sides of the interstate.

Update 7 a.m. Wednesday:

As Tuesday’s blizzard on the plains winds down Wednesday, most northeast plains highways remain closed Wednesday morning.

Forecasters at the National Weather Service in Boulder advised drivers to remain vigilant of potential blowing snow, especially in areas southeast of Interstate 76. Winds are blowing in the 25 to 35 mph range, with gust of up to 45 mph.

I-70 from Denver to Kansas has reopened but there are still road closures due to safety concerns.

Road closures as of Wednesday morning:

Interstate 76 eastbound is closed from Colorado 71 in Brush to the Nebraska state line.

U.S. 6 eastbound is closed from Sterling to the Nebraska state line.

U.S. 24 is closed from Seibert to Burlington.

U.S. 34 is closed from Brush to the Nebraska state line.

U.S. 36 is closed from Colorado 71 in Last Chance to the Kansas state line.

U.S. 138 eastbound is closed from Sterling to Julesburg.

U.S. 385 is closed from Cheyenne Wells to just south of the Nebraska state line.

Colorado 59 is closed from Interstate 70 in Seibert to U.S. 36 in Cope and again from Yuma to Sedgwick (the road is open in the town of Haxtun).

Colorado 61 is closed from U.S. 6 in Sterling to Otis.

Colorado 63 is closed from U.S. 34 in Anton to U.S. 36 in Akron.

Colorado 71 is closed from Interstate 70 in Limon to U.S. 34 near Brush.

A blizzard that developed overnight has caused most highways in the northeast plains, including Interstates 70 and 76 to close Tuesday due to poor visibility and dangerous conditions.

Forecasters at the National Weather Service in Boulder warned drivers the bad road conditions will likely stick around most of the day and even after the snow stops falling Tuesday night.

Travel should be restricted to emergencies only, forecasters said, and all drivers should make sure to have a winter survival kit with them in case they get stranded.

Update 3 p.m.:

Interstate 76 eastbound has closed between U.S. 6 in Sterling and the Nebraska border.

Update 2:35 p.m.:

Interstate 70 has closed in both directions again due to safety concerns.

The eastbound lanes of the interstate are closed from Mile Point 299 in Watkins to Mile Point 438 in Burlington, according to CDOT’s trip planning website, and the westbound lanes are closed from Mile Point 437 in Burlington to Mile Point 419 in Stratton.

Update 1:40 p.m.:

U.S. 40 between Kit Carson and Cheyenne Wells has reopened.

Update 1:15 p.m.:

Blizzard conditions will continue this evening over the Eastern Plains, the National Weather Service said.

“The National Weather Service has a high wind warning for the Eastern Plains south of Cheyenne Ridge and south of the Palmer Divide until midnight with gusts of up to 65 miles-per-hour with adverse conditions through Wednesday morning,” NWS said, warning that high-profile or light-weighing vehicles may be affected.

In the mountains along I-70, “high winds and lingering blizzard conditions continue,” with heaviest impacts “along and north of I-70 from Vail Pass and eastward.”

Update 10:30 a.m.:

U.S. 24 between Seibert and Burlington is closed, according to CDOT.

U.S. 40 between Kit Carson and Cheyenne Wells is closed.

Update 10:10 a.m.: 

Interstate 70 has reopened between the Denver metro area and the Kansas border, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation trip planning website, as of 10:04 a.m.

Most other northeast state and U.S. highways were still closed.

Update 8:45 a.m.:

Interstate 76 eastbound near Commerce City has reopened after the crash was cleared.

Road closures as of 7:10 a.m.:

Interstate 70 is closed in both directions along most of the east side of the state: the eastbound lanes from E-470 in the Denver metro to the Kansas border, and the westbound lanes from the Kansas border to Deer Trail.

In the Denver metro area, Interstate 76 eastbound is closed between U.S. 6 and 88th Street near Commerce City due to a crash.

U.S. 36 is closed from the Kansas border to just north of Byers.

U.S. 385 is closed from the Nebraska border to Cheyenne Wells.

U.S. 6 is closed from Interstate 76 east of Sterling to the Nebraska border.

Colorado 86 is closed from Elizabeth to Interstate 70 just west of Limon.

Colorado 71 is closed from Interstate 76 in Brush to Interstate 70 in Limon.

Colorado 63 is closed between Anton and Akron.

Colorado 61 is closed between Sterling and Otis.

Colorado 59 is closed between Sedgwick and Yuma. Colorado 59 is also closed between Cope and Interstate 70 in Seibert.
