Updates
10:39 p.m. — We’re wrapping up here at Ball Arena, but before we go, here are the end-of-year awards.
Sandra George of Chatfield is the girls coach of the year. 2A: Matt Brown, Wray; 3A: Tony Mustari, Eaton; 4A: Pat Laughlin, Pueblo East; 5A: Jared Deaguero, Adams City.
Bob Smith Most Outstanding girls Wrestler of the Year; Janessa Geoge, Chatfield, 110 pounds;
2A Wrestler of the Year: Brady Collins, Wray, 138 pounds; 3A Wrestler of the Year: Royce Uhrig, Gunnison, 132 pounds; 4A Wrestler of the Year: Weston Dalton, Pueblo East, 150 pounds; 5A Wrestler of the Year: Ane’e Vigil, Prairie View, 113 pounds. — Brendan Ploen
10:35 p.m. — The heavyweights delivered in thrilling fashion.
Ciara Monger is a girls three-time champion. The Calhan junior secured her pin over Natasha Kuberski of Riverdale Ridge with one minute and three seconds left in the first period.
She’s also the second female wrestler of the night to be in line for a potential four-time next year, joining Persaeus Gomez of Pomona, who won her 120-pound state title bout earlier in the night.
Elsewhere, Laith Ibrahim is a state champion with just one loss, as the Wiggins senior went out with his third state title in Class 2A 285 pounds. He led his match 14-2 and finished with a pin. — Brendan Ploen
8:11 p.m. — Pueblo East senior Weston Dalton earned his third state championship with a first-period pin of Thompson Valley sophomore Garet Hendrickson in the Class 4A 150-pound finals. The Eagles are in command of the team title race, too, ahead of Windsor and Thompson Valley about halfway through the finals round. — Kyle Newman
8:02 p.m. — D’mitri Garza-Alarcon is definitely one of the most exciting and ambitious wrestlers to watch moving forward.
The Fort Lupton junior, who famously wrestled away a potential four-timer bid from Woodland Park’s Brady Hankin last year, is now in line for his own shot at history.
He beat Mullen’s Isaak Chavez, a freshman in a 2-1 decision at the 138-pound weight class in Class 3A for his third title in the last three seasons. — Brendan Ploen
7:44 p.m. — The powerhouse clash between Ponderosa and Pomona at 138 pounds did not disappoint. Mustangs senior Brandon Cannon outlasted Pomona senior Jakob Romero, a defending state champion, in a 1-0 thriller. But it won’t be enough for Ponderosa to keep the Panthers from a five-peat. — Kyle Newman
7:30 p.m. — After her major decision win in the 120-pound girls final, Pomona’s Persaeus Gomez lifted the three-peat sign. She’s now in line to become Colorado’s first female four-timer after a 14-2 win over previously-undefeated Lexie Lopez.
Gomez controlled the girls bracket the whole weekend, including an impressive pin in the semifinals.
–Brendan Ploen
6:54 p.m. — The first four-timer in Colorado girls high school wrestling will have to wait. Chatfield’s Janessa George (43-1) pinned Loveland’s Morgan Johnson (21-1), who was previously undefeated, in the girls 110-pound final.
Johnson was seeking to become the first four-timer in Colorado girls wrestling history, as she won the last two titles in formally sanctioned tourneys, and her freshman year when the sport was a pilot program.
George came out aggressive from the start, and with 23 seconds remaining in the first period, secured the pin and sent the large Chatfield crowd into a frenzy.
Still to come tonight are two potential four-timers in the making: Persaeus Gomez of Pomona (120) and Ciara Monger (235) from Calhan. — Brendan Ploen
6:45 p.m. — Upset!!! Chatfield senior Janessa George just denied Loveland senior Morgan Johnson her bid at becoming the first four-time state champ in Colorado girls wrestling history (Johnson won the unsanctioned tournament as a freshman, then the last two). It’s the biggest upset of the tourney, by far. George, nationally ranked herself, pinned Johnson in the first round of the 110-pound finals. — Kyle Newman
6:32 p.m. — We’ve got our first three-timer of the night: Dale O’blia from Mullen. In a Class 3A 113-pound showdown, he beat Jonathan Morrison of Severance in a 15-6 major decision.
O’Blia (40-3) came after Morrison early to secure a takedown, and eventually led 7-3 after one period. In the second, starting on bottom, he scored a two-point reversal and took an 11-5 lead after two periods. In the final period, he secured one final two-point takedown. The junior will get a shot at joiner the four-timers club next year. — Brendan Ploen
6 p.m. — “Thunderstruck” by AC/DC being played prior to the first finals matches of the night. Perfect song. — Patrick Saunders
5:47 p.m. — Ahead of the national anthem, there was a moment of silence for two influential men who recently passed away: former CHSAA commissioner Bert Borgmann and Alamosa athletic director Erik Melgoza. — Kyle Newman
5:40 p.m. — As the Parade of Champions begins, it’s a good time to look at how the consolation bracket altered the boys’ 4A tourney. After Friday night, Pueblo East and Pueblo County sat No. 1 and No. 2, respectively. But entering Saturday’s finals, Pueblo East leads with 148 points, followed by Windsor (141). Pueblo County dropped to fourth (96.0). — Patrick Saunders
5:11 p.m. — With Ponderosa chasing Pomona for the Class 5A team title early Saturday night, Mustangs coach Jarion Beets brought out some lucky headgear for the final warm-up session of the state tourney.
Beets and his fellow Ponderosa coaches sported cloth headbands with their names or nicknames printed in giant red letters, giving the Mustangs’ mentors a martial-arts look as they circled the mats at Ball Arena. Beets told me the headbands — his read “BEETS” — were produced by one of his wrestlers’ moms, and that while he liked them, he also wasn’t sure if he was going to wear his during the championship matches. — Sean Keeler
5:05 p.m. — The Class 4A boys team title could come down to Saturday night’s performance by wrestlers from Pueblo County and rival Pueblo County.
At 113 pounds, Zion Mares of Pueblo County and Manuel ‘Pocky’ Amaro of Pueblo East have trained with one another for many years. Saturday, they face off for the last time in the state finals. — Patrick Saunders
5 p.m. — Some intriguing matches coming up, beginning with the girls’ tournament. Loveland’s Morgan Johnson is chasing her third crown. Janessa George of Chatfield stands in the way. — Patrick Saunders
10 a.m. — The consolation rounds have begun at Ball Arena, with those matches going through 3 p.m. until the arena is cleared out for the Parade of Champions at 5:30 p.m. Medals will be won today, and champions crowned, and we’ll be here to cover it all.
In case you missed it, we had plenty of coverage from Day 2. The Post’s Patrick Saunders told the story of Mesa Ridge heavyweight and Nebraska commit Matthew Moore, who’s looking for redemption in the 4A championship round. Brendan Ploen caught up with Pomona’s Persaeus Gomez, who’s eyeing a three-peat in the girls tournament and learned a lot this summer at the Pan-Am games. And Kyle Newman preview an all-Black Fox final in Class 5A as part of Friday night’s prep notebook.
