8:32 p.m.: The 235-pound final between Calhan junior Ciara Monger and top-seeded Alejandra Alfaro of Denver East did not disappoint. Alfaro jumped out to 3-1 lead and looked in control of the match when Monger stormed back to a 5-4 lead and scored a pin with 18 seconds left to secure a spot in the championship round. Monger is going for her third straight title, one that would push her ever closer to becoming a four-time champion. — Matt Schubert

8:28 p.m.: In an epic double overtime match, Vista Ridge’s Solomon Arnds beat Pueblo East’s Sebastian Freeman, 2-1, in the Class 4A semifinals at 175 pounds. — Patrick Saunders

7:21 p.m.: Loveland senior Morgan Johnson’s quest for a fourth state title is still alive — barely. Returning state champion Sarah DeLaCerda of Alamosa pushed Johnson to the limit in their girls 110-pound semifinal, with Johnson even getting called for stalling at one point. But she survived and now will get Chatfield’s Janessa George (42-1) in the championship round. If Johnson wins Saturday night, she will become the first female four-time champion in state history, with one qualifier: her first state title came in the 2020 tournament when it was still a pilot program. — Matt Schubert

6:30 p.m.: The stage is set at Ball Arena for Friday night’s electric semifinals.

Here are some wrestlers to watch by each class:

Laith Ibrahim (Wiggins), a class 2A heavyweight grappler goes against freshman AJ Bowman of Trinidad, while at 138 in 2A, Brady Collins of Wray is also looking to reach a fourth title match.

In 3A, Salida’s Dale Johnson is looking to reach another state title bout, this time with an undefeated record on the line. He reached the 182 final last year. 4A, meanwhile, has a pair of wrestlers who could reach a third title bout in three seasons: Jackszen Rairdon of Thompson Valley, and top-seeded Weston Dalton of Pueblo East.

The story of the day in 5A is all about Pomona, which has 10 semifinalists across all weight classes.

In the girls bracket, three wrestlers are looking to reach a third state title bout: Loveland Morgan Johnson (110), who will face Sarah DeLaCerda of Alamosa; Persaeus Gomez of Ponderosa (120s) who goes up against Kate Doughty of Canon City; Meanwhile, Calhan’s Ciara Monger will face off against top-seeded Alejandra Alfaro of Denver East. — Brendan Ploen

2:10 p.m.: Matthew Moore’s road to redemption continues. The Mesa Ridge senior heavyweight, who was upset in the title match last year, made quick work of Greeley West’s Jude Colombe in the quarterfinals, pinning him with 1:20 left in the second period. Moore won a state title as a sophomore.

2:06 p.m.: There are quick pins, and then there’s what Pueblo East’s Weston Dalton did in his Class 4A 150-pound quarterfinal against Palmer Ridge’s Max Horton (Palmer Ridge) — a 16-second fall that moves the Nebraska commit just two wins away from his third state championship. — Matt Schubert

12:59 p.m.: The Class 5A and 4A quarterfinals are underway. Scroll down below to stay on top of the results as they come in. — Matt Schubert

10:47 a.m.: The small schools and the girls have completed their quarterfinals matches. A couple of notes:

+ The girls team race is looking to be a tight one. Two-time defending champion Chatfield is currently on top with 53.5 points, but Discovery Canyon (50.0) is right behind them, and Pomona (46.0) is within striking distance as well.

+ If anyone is going to stop the Wray Eagles from winning their fifth Class 2A title in six years, it’s going to take a pretty massive comeback in wrestle-backs. The Eagles have 96 points (nearly 30 ahead of the next closest challenger in Meeker) and nine wrestlers in the semifinals. Time to start engraving that trophy now?

+ Eaton’s quest to repeat as 3A champions is off to a good start, with the Reds atop the team standings with 67.0 points — 24 ahead of Severance in second. The Reds have six wrestlers in the semifinals. — Matt Schubert

10:26 a.m.: One girls semifinal to keep an eye on tonight: Loveland senior Morgan Johnson against Alamosa junior Sarah DeLaCerda in the 110-pound bracket. Johnson is chasing a four-peat and DeLaCerda is going after a second state title of her own. Whoever comes away from that one likely gets a date with Chatfield’s Janessa George (41-1) in the final. An absolutely brutal bracket, to say the least. — Matt Schubert

8:30 a.m.: The second day of the state wrestling tournament is underway. By the end of the day, we will know who has advanced to Saturday’s championship rounds and which schools are positioned to compete for team titles. The Class 2A/3A and Girls quarterfinals run from 8:30 a.m. to noon, and will be quickly followed by the Class 4A/5A quarterfinals from 12:45 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. All of the semifinals are set to begin at 6:30 p.m.

In case you missed it, Kyle Newman had the story on all the brother tandems making noise in the Class 2A tournament, while columnist Sean Keeler caught up with Ponderosa senior Brandon Cannon, who’s overcome tumors and kidney infections that left him bedridden on his way to the state quarterfinals.
