Updates

(6:13 p.m.) That’s a wrap. The 2023 CHSAA state track and field championships are officially in the books. Thanks for staying with us all weekend. The three-day event featured many record-breaking performances while the Niwot girls continued their dominance in the state. See below for a list of all the winners and team champions. — Ryan McFadden

CT takes the title, but T-Ridge finishes on top (5:43 p.m.): The Cherokee Trail boys claimed their first team 5A state title in 10 years, but it came with a slightly bittersweet ending. That’s because the ThunderRidge foursome of Jeffrey Franquemont, Christopher Savko, Kyler Pilgrim and Kenneth Carpenter pulled off a stunner in the 1600-meter relay, edging out Cherokee Trail in a 5A meet record time of 3 minutes and 15.29 seconds.

Still, the Cougars can be satisfied with their second state title in 10 years, especially after finishing as a runner-up to Grandview a year ago. — Matt Schubert

All Niwot, all the time (5:17 p.m.): The Niwot girls are state champions for the fourth meet in a row. The Cougars put the finishing touches on a dominant three days with a 1600 meter relay championship from Julia Rudolph, Simocea Esquibel, Mia Prok and Madison Shults — the team’s eighth and final event win of the meet. The Niwot boys came close, but ultimately fell two points shy of Lutheran in an extremely tight 4A team competition that saw the Lions claim the title with 67 points followed by Northfield at 66 and Niwot at 65. — Matt Schubert

Finishing on top (5:04 p.m.): Talk about going out with a bang. A day after winning her first state title in the 3200, Pomona senior Emma Stutzman claimed the 5A girls 1600 in a Colorado prep record time of 4 minutes, 39.94 seconds. And she needed every ounce of that record-breaking effort, because Air Academy junior Bethany Michalak broke Cherry Creek grad Riley Stewart’s two-year-old record (4:44.13) as well with her runner-up finish (4:42.65). — Matt Schubert

Valor Christian shines in Class 5A boys 1,600-meter run: Valor Christian had a pair of runners finish in the top two of the 5A boys 1,600-meter run. Senior and Colorado commit Drew Castelow placed first with a time of 4:12.88, while junior Dane Eike finished second at 4:13.61. On Friday, Eike captured the 5A boys 3,200-meter run. — Ryan McFadden

Mesa Ridge girls can flat out run (3:52 p.m.): One thing that’s clear in the 4A girls meet? The Mesa Ridge girls sure are fast. Not only did Janise Everett win gold in the 100 (12.07) and 200 (24.87), but the Grizzlies foursome of Rimari Facey, Danaya Kinnard, Olivia Clay and Jamielynn Dees broke the 4A meet record in the 400 relay with a time of 47.21 seconds. Just imagine if Everett was in on that run. — Matt Schubert

Another record-breaking performance for Underwood (3:16 p.m.): The Mead senior has put together a remarkable performance on the final day of the state track and field championship. After stellar showing in the 4A boys 400-meter dash, Underwood blazed through the 200-meter dash in 20.93 seconds, shattering the 4A state record for another first-place finish. — Ryan McFadden

Four-timers’ club (2:56 p.m.): It appears we’ll have two athletes walk away with four individual titles in the 2023 state track and field meet. On the boys’ side, Arickaree’s Jacob Jefferson turned the 1A meet into his own personal showcase with wins in the 400 (50.80), 800 (2:02.20), 110 hurdles (15.78) and 300 hurdles (41.55). Dayspring Christian junior Eboselulu Omofoma did the same in the girls’ meet with wins in the 100 hurdles (14.81), 300 hurdles (36-5), high jump (5-1) and triple jump (36-5).

In actuality, the 2A meet was more the Omofoma Invite after sister Odone walked away with the 100 (12.18) and 200 (25.11) titles. — Matt Schubert

Team titles all but wrapped up (2:07): We’ve still got roughly four hours left in the state championships, but a few teams appear to be locked in as champions. The Niwot girls (of course) are cruising in the 4A girls standings and well on their way to fourth straight title. Their make counterparts are neck and neck with Lutheran in the 4A boys standings. Meanwhile, The Classical Academy is well on its way to the 3A boys crown, while the Cherokee Trail boys have surged ahead of the pack to take control in 5A and Valor Christian is in control of the 5A girls meet. — Matt Schubert

No sprint sweep in 5A girls meet (2:02 p.m.): Mountain Vista senior Rachel Bair’s bid to sweep the 5A girls sprints came close. Oh so close. But Erie’s Myla Wilkes wasn’t about to walk away without a state title of her own. The junior made the 200-meter dash hers, winning in 24.18 seconds, just ahead of Bair (24.78) after finishing third in the 100 earlier in the day. — Matt Schubert

More throwing doubles (1:38 p.m.): The Colorado King of the Throws in 2023? That would be Grand Junction Central’s Daniel Baroumbaye, who had the top marks of the meet in the discus (194 feet, 11 inches) and shot put (60-0) to claim both 4A boys titles. Chatfield’s Charlie Lafore wasn’t too far behind. He won the 5A boys shot ( 55-8.75) and disc (178-6). — Matt Schubert

Cruzan’s revenge (1:28 p.m.): Montezuma-Cortez’s Zander Cruzan was denied the sprint sweep he was looking for after getting edged out by Jefferson Academy senior Chrisly Kelly-Cannon in a photo finish in the 100, but he got his revenge in the 200, topping Kelly-Cannon for the 4A boys title in 21.47. Thrown together with his victory in the 400 (48.76), and it was a pretty fine day for Cruzan.

In the 4A girls meet, Mesa Ridge’s Janise Everett claimed a state title double by winning the 100 (12.07) and 200 (24.87). — Matt Schubert

Mountain Vista’s Bair eyeing sweep (12:24 p.m.): Two down, one to go for Mountain Vista’s Rachel Bair. The Utah commit won both the 100 (11.82) and 400 (56.05) on Saturday morning in the 5A girls meet and can claim a sprint sweep if she wins the 200 later this afternoon. She had the second-fastest preliminary time in the event on Thursday behind Erie’s Myla Wilkes, so it’s far from a sure thing. — Matt Schubert

Underwood sets a new Colorado prep 400 record (11:40 a.m.): Mead’s Tavon Underwood lost the 100-meter race but more than made up for it in the 400-meter dash. He smashed the Colorado prep record that had stood since 2006 with a time of 45.36. (Littleton High’s J.T. Scheurman held the previous record). Underwood actually wasn’t too far off from the national record of 45.19 set in 2012, either. — Brendan Ploen

Leaping into the record books (11:29 a.m.): Grand Junction leaper Miller Jones capped off a dominant showing in the 4A boys meet Saturday morning, claiming the triple jump with a meet record leap of 50 feet, 5 inches — more than a half foot better than the previous record held by Widefield’s Tony Carodine (49-8.75) since 2012. Miller won the long jump earlier in the meet. — Matt Schubert

Brandon Hills’ star turn continues (11 a.m.): A day after breaking the Colorado prep record in the 5A long jump, Vista Ridge’s Brandon Hills became the fastest high school runner in Colorado. The Washington State football commit won from Lane 4 in 10.52 seconds. Hills, whose survived getting shot a year ago, took down a strong field that saw all nine runners finish under 11 seconds, including Cherokee Trail sophomore Peyton Sommers (10.62) in second and Erie junior Blake Barnett, a Kansas State football commit, in third (10.76). — Matt Schubert

All we do is break records now (10:56 a.m.): Four of the first six 100-meter dashes have produced new meet records for their classifications, with the latest two coming in the 1A meet, where Denver Academy’s DJ Harris (11.15) and Prairie’s Roxy Unruh (12.38) both won state titles with record-breaking times. — Matt Schubert

Another record goes down! (10:45 a.m.): Just minutes after an incredible 3A boys 100-meter dash, the 4A boys follow with another all-timer as Lutheran junior Joseph Ciccio edged out Mead senior Tavon Underwood, a Kansas State commit, with a 10.53-second time that tied the 4A meet record set by Fountain-Fort Carson’s Gregg Trigg in 2000. Underwood was going for an improbable sweep of the 100, 200, 400 and 800 in 4A. It appears he might just have to settle for three titles instead of four. — Matt Schubert

Absurd photo finish (10:37 a.m.): There it is: The greatest 3A 100-meter dash ever raced in Colorado track and field history. Jefferson Academy senior Chrisly Kelly-Cannon narrowly beat Montezuma-Cortez senior Zander Cruzan as both broke the 3A meet record with listed times of 10.61 seconds. Go one decimal point further, however, and Kelly-Cannon won by one-one thousandth of a second at 10.604 to Cruzan’s 10.605. It doesn’t get any tighter than that, friends. — Brendan Ploen and Matt Schubert

Hainer breaks record in sweep (10:28 a.m.): Granada’s John Hainer is officially the king of throws in Class 1A. After winning the discus earlier in the meet, the senior claimed the shot put title this morning with a 1A meet record toss of 53 feet, 5.5 inches. — Matt Schubert

Niwot domination (10:13 a.m.): Another race, another 4A state title for Niwot. This time it’s Kimora Northrup, who successfully defending her 100-meter hurdles crown with a 14.43-second time that ensured she will walk away from her prep career with at least three individual state championships. She’s still got the 300 hurdles later today, an event she won in 2021. And if she can come out on top there, it’s completely plausible that Niwot will win every individual race outside of the 100- and 200-meter dashes in the 4A girls meet. — Matt Schubert

Going for eight (10:05 a.m.): Dayspring Christian junior Eboselulu Omofoma just dominated the field in the Class 2A 100-meter hurdles. She crossed the finish line with a time of 14.81 seconds — one second faster than the second-place finisher Kaitlyn Pearson of Swallows Charter Academy (15.92). She will have a chance to go for an eighth state title win later this afternoon in the 300-meter hurdles. — Brendan Ploen

And the medals are coming in (9:58 a.m.): We’re starting off the day with the hurdles, and Denver East is on the board with another state title, as Nigel James claimed the 110-meter high hurdles in 14.36 seconds in what might be considered a bit of an upset. James came into the final with the fourth-best time in preliminaries, but then stepped up when the medals were on the line. — Matt Schubert

Title time. This is it (8:30 a.m.): The third and final day of the 2023 CHSAA state track and field championships. What comes next will be a fast and furious ride to the finish line as 78 individuals, 20 relays and 10 teams are crowned state champions over the next 10 hours. There will be drama. There will be down-to-the-wire finishes. And there will probably be a few tears. No matter what, it should be fun. — Matt Schubert
