Updates

That’s a wrap: Two days, 16 games down. One day, eight more games to go. With today’s results, here’s how the Final 4 shapes up in Class 4A set for next Thursday at Denver Coliseum:

Boys

No. 17 Holy Family (15-11) vs. No. 4 Eagle Ridge Academy (21-5), 12:45 p.m.

No. 2 Resurrection Christian (22-4) vs. No. 6 Lutheran (18-8), 4 p.m.

Girls

No. 1 Holy Family (23-3) vs. No. 4 Lutheran (23-3), 11 a.m.

No. 2 D’Evelyn (26-0) vs. No. 3 University (24-2), 2:15 p.m.

No. 4 Eagle Ridge Academy boys 63, No. 12 Pueblo Central 57

The Eagle Ridge Academy program won six games in the 2019-2020 season. In the span of three years, the outlook of the program changed entirely.

With five players who are 6-foot-6 or taller, it’s easy to see why the No. 4 seed Warriors were a favorite to return to the Great 8 for the second successive season. Still, behind a 26-point effort from Hunter Hill and 13 more from Christian Seifert, Eagle Ridge Academy reached new heights with its first Final 4 berth in program history in a win over scrappy Pueblo Central.

The Wildcats (18-7) pressed hard in the final frame and cut the deficit to one point midway through the quarter, as Xavier Davis had a 26-point night. While Central made it a four-point game with 15.7 seconds left and also got a steal on the ensuing press, they couldn’t find a basket late. Ultimately, the length was too much as the Brighton-based Warriors (21-5) did just enough at the free-throw line and on the boards to hold on.

9:54 p.m.: Considering the height advantage that the Warriors have, they’re not using it to the best of their abilities. However, in spurts, it’s there in all of its glory, such as an alley-oop from James “Kyren” Allen to ignite the crowd. The Warriors lead Pueblo Central 39-37 after three quarters, as Hunter Hill has 18 points so far. — Brendan Ploen

9:27 p.m.: We’ve got a good one for the final game of the night here at the Coliseum, as Eagle Ridge Academy leads Pueblo Central 26-22. Hunter Hill has a pair of dunks and 12 points to lead all scorers, but Xavier Davis has a solid 10 points to keep the Wildcats in it. — Brendan Ploen

No. 1 Holy Family girls 55, No. 8 Delta 31

After a slow start to the first half, the Holy Family girls basketball team showed why they’re the No. 1 seed in 4A.

The Tigers (23-3) forced over 30 turnovers in their quarterfinal against No. 8 Delta on Friday night in a 55-31 win.

Delta (19-6) got off to a promising start and took a 9-8 lead at the end of the first quarter and kept it close heading into the locker room at 21-15. However, the third quarter was all Tigers. They forced 13 turnovers against the Panthers which led to plenty of easy layups. If the boys Tigers’ team was all about beyond the arc, the girls were all about defense.

Essyence Contreraz led the way with 11 points, Julia Hodell had eight, while three players had six.

8:34 p.m.: Holy Family definitely brought havoc in the second half, as the Tigers forced over 20 second-half turnovers to help turn a six-point lead at half to over 20. The Tigers cruised to a 55-31 win over No. 8 Delta and sent the purple brigade, who were also in attendance for the boys’ win, home happy. — Brendan Ploen

8:18 p.m.: Just like that, Holy Family opened up a gap against No. 8 Delta, taking a 40-23 lead after three quarters. The Tigers forced eight Panther turnovers and got plenty of easy layups — 21 points for the game in total. — Brendan Ploen

7:55 p.m.: It’s halftime in the girls 4A quarterfinals and Holy Family outscored Delta 13-6 to take a 21-15 lead into the break.

A pair of Panthers lead the way in scoring, as Somers and Breezy Huff have five points apiece, while Essyence Contrearz has four for the Tigers. Should be a good second half coming up. — Brendan Ploen

7:35 p.m.: No. 8 seed Delta girls are off to a solid start against top-seeded Holy Family with a 9-8 lead after one quarter, as the Tigers had both boys and girls teams in the 4A Great 8. The Panthers are led by Taylor Somers, a sophomore, who has five points. — Brendan Ploen

No. 17 Holy Family boys 60, No. 8 Colorado Academy 43

The Holy Family Tigers are not playing like the No. 17 seed in the boys Class 4A field. It certainly wasn’t the case in Saturday’s Great 8 quarterfinals against Colorado Academy, as the Tigers (15-11) shot 50% from beyond the arc and cruised to a victory.

Holy Family, which has attempted over 550 3-pointers this season, got hot early, as it took a 19-18 lead at halftime with five three-pointers. In the third quarter, they were able to outscore the Mustangs (18-8) 23-3 and held on in the fourth quarter.

“The trust that we have in each other (is key)” said Eric Quintana, who finished with 12 points. “If we make the extra pass, we know it’s going to go down. Even if we miss it, the next one is going down. That’s why we do so well in these environments.”

6:45 p.m.: Holy cow, Holy Family! The Tigers swarmed the Mustangs and got a rousing ovation from the purple brigade from Broomfield. It’s 42-21 after three quarters, and the Tigers held Colorado Academy to three points in the quarter, plenty of which came off turnovers. — Brendan Ploen

6:16 p.m.: It’s halftime of the boys 4A quarterfinals and it’s a doozy so far, with Holy Family holding on to a narrow 19-18 lead over Colorado Academy. –– Brendan Ploen

The Mustangs have balanced attack all over with all five starters on the scoresheet, while Eric Quintana leads the way for the Tigers with nine points, all on three-pointers. Holy Family is 5-of-11 from beyond the arc. — Brendan Ploen

6:00 p.m.: Well, the Tigers can certainly shoot it, as Holy Family leads Colorado Academy 12-5 after one quarter in the boys Class 4A quarterfinals.

No. 3 University girls 54, No. 6 Eaton 43

The University Bulldogs played shut-down defense in the third quarter and had a balanced scoring attack to get past Eaton in the Class 4A girls quarterfinals.

The Bulldogs (23-2) were led by senior shooting guard Taryn Kravig with 13 points. Addison Harding chipped in 11 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the floor while Miranda Wiedeman had 10 points and eight rebounds.

University had already played Eaton (19-7) twice before in league play, but were still motivated to reach a third consecutive Final 4 appearance.

“Defense definitely fuels us into our offense and we definitely work on it a lot at practice,” Wiedeman said. “You can always control your effort and the boards and I know it can really push us into our offense as well.”

5:25 p.m.: The Bulldogs are heading to their third consecutive Final Four appearance as a balanced scoring attack led the way. Eaton made the game closer with a 24-point final frame but a 12-point third quarter to extend the lead to 41-19 was what got the Bulldogs over the line.

4:55 p.m.: University is running away with it after three quarters with a 41-19 lead. If the first half was about balance, the third quarter quickly became about the Bulldog’s defense, as they limited Eaton to just five points, while they added another 12 more. Three players. Kravig, Addison Harding and Wiedeman are all in double figures. — Brendan Ploen

4:30 p.m.: It’s halftime here in the girls 4A quarterfinals and University has shot in front to a 29-14 lead. University’s Taryn King is at eight points, while four other players are on the scoresheet as the Bulldogs were able to move the ball quickly in transition for easy baskets. — Brendan Ploen

4:15 p.m.: A good one to start the girls Class 4A quarterfinals between No. 3 University and No. 6 Eaton, as University got off to a 15-10 lead after the first quarter. Miranda Wiedeman leads all scorers to start the game with seven points. — Brendan Ploen

No. 6 Lutheran boys 65, No. 3 Alamosa 56

2:55 p.m.: And Lutheran closes it out. Hunter Caldwell had a pair of putbacks, including a massive one off a missed free throw for a 58-52 lead, and the Lions made 5 of 7 free throws over the final 69 seconds of OT to seal it. — Matt Schubert

2:50 p.m.: Kade Speckman is not afraid. Two post-up buckets in the final minute from the Lutheran big man tied things up at 50 with 2.5 seconds left in regulation. We’re now in OT and the Lions have surged ahead thanks to their big men. — Matt Schubert

2:38 p.m.: The Alamosa defense is locked in. Lutheran has one basket since the mid-point of the fourth quarter, and the Lions now trail 50-46 with 55.7 seconds left and the ball. — Matt Schubert

2:33 p.m.: Of course, it’s a defensive stop that produces the biggest play of the fourth quarter to this point: Jayr Almeida picking off a pass and taking it the other way for an and-one layup. It’s 47-46 Alamosa with 1:36 left. — Matt Schubert

2:30 p.m.: The pace has ground to a halt, and now we’ve got ourselves a halfcourt defensive slugfest. All tied at 44 after Luke Christensen buried a corner 3 pointer for Alamosa. Just 3:02 left. — Matt Schubert

2:18 p.m.: Lutheran has found its footing. Braydon Jacobs opened the third quarter with back-to-back 3s to briefly give the Lions the lead. After another five-point surge from Alamosa, the Lions answered with jumpers from Tucker Monroe and Lalo Gonzales to take a 39-38 lead into the fourth quarter. Lutheran’s big men have shut down everything around the hoop. — Matt Schubert

1:55 p.m.: With Alamosa threatening to run away with things, Lutheran closes out the second quarter with an 8-2 run fueled by 3-pointers from guards Lalo Gonzales and Braydon Jacob right before the buzzer. It’s 31-28 Alamosa at halftime. — Matt Schubert

1:49 p.m.: The Mean Moose have taken control with a 20-5 run between the first and second quarters. Alamosa up 29-20 with 3:11 left in the first half. — Matt Schubert

No. 4 Lutheran girls 54, No. 12 Berthoud 36

Raelyn Kelty wasn’t going to be denied.

Not in the paint.

Not from the arc.

Not from the charity stripe.

And not from the Final Four.

Lutheran’s do-it-all senior pretty much did it all for the Lions at the Class 4A Great 8, posting a stat line of 21 points, 11 rebounds, seven free-throw makes and a pair of second half treys to lift the fourth seed over upset-minded Berthoud, 54-36, early Friday afternoon.

The 5-foot-11 forward drained two 3-pointers in the final three minutes of the third period, powering a 6-0 run for the Lions and opening up what had been a 1-point game.

Katie Vierra netted nine points and Anna Flaherty and Reece Kraljic added eight points each for the Spartans, who took a 24-23 lead into the halftime break.

Until Kelty caught fire, the tilt was a see-saw battle, a sloppy contest that saw more combined turnovers (19) than buckets (16) at the half.

Berkley Schneider chipped in 12 points for the Lions (23-3), who will face the winner of the tussle between No. 1 seed Holy Family and eighth-seeded Delta on Friday night at the Coliseum.

12:52 p.m. — It’s the Raelyn Kelty Show again, as the Lutheran senior just put up nine points in the third quarter to give the Lions a 36-29 lead heading into the final eight minutes. She also drained a pair of 3-pointers to power a 6-0 run and open up what had been a 1-point game. –-Sean Keeler

12:26 p.m. – A Kaylee Padilla 3-pointer with 36 seconds left brought a quieted Berthoud crowd to its collective feet. It also gave the Spartans a 24-23 lead at the half of a sloppy tilt that’s featured more combined turnovers (19) than makes (16).  – Sean Keeler

12:06 p.m. — Raelyn Kelty’s not messing around. The Lutheran senior ripped down her fifth rebound of the afternoon to go along with a team-high eight points as the Lions pushed their first-quarter lead to 23-19 with 5:08 left in the half. – Sean Keeler

No. 2 Resurrection Christian boys 68, No. 23 The Classical Academy 44

Cinderella finally lost her slipper.

Behind rugged defense around the rim and enough outside shooting to negate an early 3-point barrage from The Classical Academy’s Jordan Wenger, Resurrection Christian knocked off the lowest seed left in any of the state brackets at Denver Coliseum.

The last of TCA’s eight 3-pointers drew the Titans within eight of the Cougars with 4:59 left, but Resurrection Christian didn’t allow another bucket the rest of the way as it closed out the game on a 16-0 run.

Ty Yoder scored 14 of his 19 points in the second half, including three of his four triples, fellow sophomore Cade Crutcher added a game-high 20 points and big man Jacob Barker finished with 13 points for the Cougars (22-4).

Wenger hit all five of his 3-point attempts in the first half, but cooled off in the second half, finishing with 17 points for the Titans (17-9).

11:19 a.m.: TCA refuses to go away. Both teams just traded 3s — again — and it’s still an eight-point lead for Resurrection Christian, 52-44, with 4:59 left in the game. — Matt Schubert

11:11 a.m.: A five-point spurt from TCA, highlighted by Don Mullinix’s 3-pointer, keeps the Titans within striking distance of Resurrection Christian. It’s 47-39 entering the fourth quarter. — Matt Schubert

11:06 a.m.: So much for the unforgiving rims of Denver Coliseum. Resurrection Christian has knocked down five 3s already in this game (and TCA 6), including three in the third quarter. The last one, from Ty Yoder, put the Cougars ahead 44-32 with 2:25 left in the third quarter. — Matt Schubert

10:48 a.m.: The difference so far: a 7-0 Resurrection Christian run that finally gave the Cougars a little distance between them and The Classical Academy. The Cougars lead 27-22 at halftime. — Matt Schubert
