Van Leeuwen Ice Cream, which started in New York City in 2008 before expanding to California, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Texas — and into grocery stores nationwide — will open its first Colorado store on Aug. 6 in Boulder, at 1750 29th St.
The company is planning to open a second location in Denver’s Larimer Square in late summer or early fall.
The company is known for its wide variety of unusual flavors, including Honeycomb, Marionberry Cheesecake and Earl Grey Tea. But it also made waves for teaming up with Grey Poupon on a mustard ice cream and with Kraft on a Macaroni & Cheese ice cream.
Those two won’t be available in the Boulder store — at least not at first — but the Kraft collab can be purchased and shipped online if you want to track it down. (Some of its other flavors can be purchased at Whole Foods and other markets.)
The store will have 30 flavors, though, including a collaboration it did with NBA star Jimmy Butler of the Miami Heat, called BIGFACE Coffee Affogato. Van Leeuwen will also serve a limited-edition flavor that it designed just for Boulder: Rocky Mountain Road is a green spruce ice cream with a fudge swirl, marshmallows, candied pecans and pistachios.
“We are so happy to bring Van Leeuwen to Colorado and serve good ice cream in one of the most beautiful places in the country. Selfishly, we cannot wait to hike off the scoops we’re going to be eating on Mount Sanitas,” said Ben Van Leeuwen, co-founder and CEO, in a statement.
