A climber reported missing in the Indian Peaks Wilderness was found dead Tuesday, according to the Grand County Sheriff’s Office.
Search and rescue crews began looking for the missing man Tuesday morning after a caller reported an overdue climber in the Lone Eagle Peak area near Crater Lake in the Arapaho & Roosevelt National Forests.
The man’s planned route was from Brainard Lake to Pawnee Pass, Crater Lake, Lone Eagle Peak, Apache Peak and back to Brainard Lake, sheriff’s officials said in a news release Wednesday.
His body was found by hikers near Lone Eagle Peak around 12:15 p.m. Tuesday but could not be recovered because of weather and difficulty accessing the area.
A Colorado Division of Fire Protection and Control helicopter and crew flew out of Cañon City early Wednesday morning, picked up Rocky Mountain Rescue Group technical rope specialists in Boulder and traveled to the base of Lone Eagle Peak.
Rescue crews recovered the man’s body around 1 p.m. Wednesday, sheriff’s officials said. His name will be released by the Grand County Coroner’s Office.
