U.S. 40 over Berthoud Pass reopens Wednesday night

Update 6:20 p.m.: U.S. 40 over Berthoud Pass reopened shortly after 6 p.m., according to the Colorado Department of Transportation.

There are still adverse road conditions on the pass, including blowing snow, wind gusts over 50 mph and up to 10 inches of new snow expected to accumulate.

Road crews worked around the clock since Sunday to reopen the highway, the agency posted on Facebook. A short closure is planned for 5:30 a.m. Thursday for winter maintenance.

Update 4 p.m.: Two Colorado roadways that had been closed since the weekend due to safety concerns brought on by winter weather and snow removal operations were reopened Wednesday, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation.

The reopened roads include:

Interstate 70 in both directions over Vail Pass; and
U.S. 6 in both directions over Loveland Pass.

U.S. 40 remains closed in both directions over Berthoud Pass from Berthoud Falls to Mary Jane ski area. The department noted on Facebook Wednesday afternoon that reopening the roadway remains a priority, but continuous slides in the area and snowfall forecast for Wednesday night have delayed its ability to do so.
