A beloved East Coast bagel chain plans to go west with two Denver locations

A bagel chain beloved in Washington, D.C., and Maryland plans to expand from its East Coast roots, with two outposts set for the Mile High City.

Call Your Mother Deli, a bagel shop and deli, will open the stores early next year at 1291 N. Pearl St. in Capitol Hill and 3870 Tennyson St. around Berkeley, D.C.-area magazine Washingtonian first reported.

Owners Daniela Moreira and Andrew Dana currently run seven stores — five in the nation’s capital and two in neighboring Maryland, with the first opened in 2018 in D.C.’s Park View neighborhood.

While touring different places across the country, “none of the cities really felt right until we toured Denver,” Dana said in a telephone interview. “Denver just sort of instantly felt like a second home.”

He said he appreciates the Mile High City’s neighborhoods in particular.

“Selfishly, when I’m just thinking about, like, what’s a city I want to spend a ton of time in while I’m working, Denver just made so much sense. So we went for it,” he added.

Call Your Mother is dubbed a “Jew-ish” deli. Both Dana and former investor Jeff Zients are Jewish.

The chain, which is wildly popular in D.C., earned a national spot on Eater’s list of “The 16 Best New Restaurants in America” in 2019. It’ll boost the Mile High City’s bagel game, in which Moe’s Broadway Bagels, Rosenberg’s Bagels and Leroy’s Bagels are all players.

“We want it to be fun and vibrant and full of energy,” Dana said about his forthcoming Denver locations. “Hopefully, it’s a big ol’ party.”

The menu includes bagel sandwiches, lunch sandwiches on challah or rye, coffee, latkes and “schweets.” Bagel options range from za’atar to corn-jalapeno cheddar to blueberry muffin.

The team behind Call Your Mother is tied to several sister restaurants in Washington, D.C., and Virginia: Timber Pizza, Turu’s Pizza, Mercy Me and Ballston Service Station.

“We just always love a good challenge,” Dana said. “The second we get relatively comfortable, we want to do something to shock the system that’s hard.”
