A shooting at a busy intersection in Broomfield left one person dead and a Denver police officer wounded.
The incident happened Thursday afternoon at Sheridan Boulevard and East Midway Boulevard, according to the Broomfield Police Department. The intersection was closed to traffic, and there is a large police presence in the area.
A person was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
The incident unfolded about 3 p.m. when Broomfield police were called to assist Denver police, said Rachel Haslett, a spokeswoman with Broomfield police.
The Denver police fugitive unit was attempting to take a homicide suspect into custody, and that suspect was in a white Ford Edge going south on Sheridan, Haslett said. The driver of the vehicle made a left onto Midway and collided with a blue Ford Explorer. After the collision, the suspect got out of the white vehicle and ran toward a gray sedan, which he attempted to carjack.
Officers from Denver approached the suspect, who was armed, and there was an exchange of gunfire, Haslett said. The suspect, a man who was not identified, was shot and killed. A Denver officer, who was shot in the neck, was taken to a hospital. He was described as being in stable condition.
“We are thankful that no more people were injured,” Haslett said at an evening news conference streamed by Denver7. “This could have been much worse.”
Broomfield police are leading the investigation. No Broomfield officers were on the scene when the shooting happened. They had been notified that the fugitive team was in the area, Haslett said.
Interim Denver Police Chief Ron Thomas visited the wounded officer, a 20-year veteran of the department, Thursday evening at the hospital.
Thomas told CBS Colorado that the officer is expected to recover.
“It’s always difficult. … It is always a difficult call to take,” Thomas said of the shooting.
The intersection in Broomfield was closed into the night as Broomfield investigators processed the scene for evidence and interviewed witnesses. A woman was in the car with the suspect when the incident unfolded. She was not immediately taken into custody, and investigators were trying to determine the extent of her involvement in the case.
