Denver is heading into training camp with three quarterbacks on the roster instead of four.
The Broncos on Tuesday waived Jarrett Guarantano and now will proceed forward with the trio of Russell Wilson, Jarrett Stidham and Ben DiNucci.
Guarantano was part of a series of transactions made by Denver on report day for veterans. The team made its signing of kicker Brett Maher to a one-year deal formal and also brought back college free agent wide receiver Nick Williams, a former Cherry Creek High School standout.
Guarantano was originally signed late in the 2022 season and the Broncos felt strongly enough about him to keep him on the roster through the offseason. In the spring, though, they signed DiNucci after he put together a strong showing in the XFL. DiNucci impressed during the offseason program and the Broncos decided to keep him along with Wilson and Stidham, a March free-agent signing.
If Denver sticks with that trio through camp, coach Sean Payton and general manager George Paton will have to decide if they want to carry three quarterbacks on the 53-man roster — Payton typically didn’t over his many years in New Orleans — or if they can get DiNucci through waivers and onto the practice squad.
Maher, who agreed to the one-year deal Friday, will compete with Elliott Fry for Denver’s starting job after the team cut Brandon McManus earlier this offseason.
Williams spent part of the offseason program on the Broncos’ roster but was waived before Denver signed outside linebacker Frank Clark last month. Now the 6-foot-4, 220-pound receiver, who spent five years at CSU-Pueblo before 2022 at UNLV, is back on his hometown NFL team for the outset of training camp.
Broncos working out WRs: In addition to signing Williams, the Broncos on Tuesday also worked out wide receivers Justin Marshall, Josh Hammond and Michael Bandy, according to the league’s transaction wire.
Hammond went undrafted in 2020 out of Florida and has spent time on the roster in Jacksonville, Philadelphia and New England before playing in the XFL for the DC Defenders. Bandy spent most of 2021-22 on the Los Angeles Chargers practice squad and played in the XFL for the Houston Roughnecks. Marshall went undrafted out of Buffalo this spring and spent part of the offseason on Atlanta’s roster.
